Round 2 : Week 1 Day 3 Trade Log

Today was a good day, up over £5,000 on yesterday and £6,643 in total.

I caved and placed a short bet on the FTSE250, hedging half on my total at risk (£22,500) so that if the markets plummet I am protected to an extent. This will obviously affect my profits in the bull market but I think it is a safer strategy going forward and if it takes me a bit longer to reach my goal then so be it.

I have changed the trade log table to display whether the bet is long or short. I have removed the % on prev day and % on total risk. I'm not sure if any of use that for anything but if you do and want it back, leave a comment or email me (oliver.tomahawk@gmail.com)

£45k to £90k trades and entry prices

I'm back in - £44,881 invested...

So, I have placed 18 bets as of this morning. I will posting details later but as I said, I would invest 50% of my last winnings as well as the initial £30k. 

From today's bets, my total at risk is £44,881.40.

Hovering between £2.5k and £3k down which considering my hit on spread, and the markets being down, is certainly not unexpected.

I've decided to start a new experiment - £45k to £90k

So, after some serious consideration I have decided to start a new experiment where I take half of my profits earned in the last experiment, add it those to my initial stake and invest that back into the market. So I will have £45k this time.

I am going to attempt to double it, again in 12 months. 

I know what you will be thinking; I doubled my money in less than three months last time so surely I can double my money quickly again? But I am not so sure. I think I was extremely lucky last time and timed the markets almost perfectly. I am enough of a realist to realise that this probably will not happen again.

I also wonder about the big crash that quite a few commentators seem to be predicting. Generally when everyone starts piling their money into the market, that is a sure sign that the bears are approaching, and a sign to take your money out. The US say they are stopping QE sometime soon (so they say anyway), our own central banker; Mervyn King, was outvoted in his request for expanding the UK's QE, so it seems likely that the bears are going to take hold soon and markets will plunge. Or will they?

Either way, I feel that if I am going to do this full time as some stage and quit my job then I need to be in the market through thick and thin. 

The question is now just when to re-enter. I have chosen 18 bets that I want to place and now need to decide if today's the day to do it.

I'm still here

Just to let my loyal readers know that I am still around!

I am still watching the market and feel weirdly out of touch not being invested, so I might be back in sooner than I thought, but let's see.

So, I have been looking at a few stocks and this is what I think:
To Buy:
Spectris & Easyjet

Not sure you want to be shorting stocks right now but if I had to choose some to short:
Vodafone & Anglo American

Some thoughts for the weekend maybe.

Summary and stats of all my trades in turning £30,000 into £60,000

I have achieved my goal of turning £30,000 into £60,000 !!!

Wow - is all I can really say to this, I am still in a bit of shock I think; it has taken me less than 3 months to do what I thought would take me a year.

I closed all my positions yesterday morning once I was over £30,000.

My final tally was £30,101.90.

This was my target and just like any normal trade I wanted to stick to my rules so I sold out.

I also think that even though the markets are going crazy at the moment, some time out is a good thing. I need a break and it will give me some time to reflect on what I have achieved and to analyse my bets. I am also wondering where the market is going to be honest, I am a little concerned about the massive gains lately, I think we are due for a correction sometime soon. Maybe it's a good time to sit on the side-lines for a while and watch.

This will not be the end of this blog though, or the end of my spread betting - that's for sure.

I'll be back into the markets before long, that's a given. 

I performed this experiment because I have always wanted to see if I could actually make money trading. I clearly picked a great time for it. But, even though I am an eternal optimist, I am also a realist and I know that I have been supremely lucky with what I have achieved over the last two and a bit months. I could just as easily lose it all again if I am not careful.

I would really love to see if I could do it again, and I will at some stage. If I could keep doing this until I have enough of a pot to trade-for-a-living on, that is where I want to be.

But when I do re-enter the market, do I use the full £60k I now have or do I just use £30k again and keep £30k for a rainy day. I feel that I should at least keep some in cash, maybe not £30k but some.

What do you guys think?

Anyway, here is a table of all my bets placed during this experiment, the winners, losers, entry price, close price and profit or loss. The astute of you will notice that if you subtract the entry price from the close price and multiply that by the £’s per point you won’t necessarily arrive at my profit / loss. You will undoubtedly get a smaller profit or larger loss. This is due to daily rolling costs that the spread betting companies charge. The profit and loss figure is the actual money I took out, or paid in once the bet was closed.

Experiment is over - I've made £30k profits !

Was planning on doing it in 6 months, achieved it in less than 3. All I can say is wow !

Week 10 - I made £9,802

Posting this on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning in London. I was planning on writing a long and detailed message about the ups and downs of this week but most of you are probably out enjoying the sunshine (well, those in London anyway) so I am going to be quick as I too want to get out there and enjoy the sunshine !

A great week all in all, I made £9,802 !

Currently sitting on £26,429 - let's hope this bull run continues for a bit longer so I can reach my £30k target.

Last day of week 9 trade log

I lost my twitter password today. 

This created a slight bit of panic I must be honest. 

I didn't have a backup address configured, had not registered my phone number and when I asked for a reset password email to be sent it never arrived so it was clear that my email address that was configured was wrong. Basically, if I couldn't remember my password, my account was gone forever. 

After many, many attempts I finally got it right and then checked my email address configured and guess what? Instead of oliver.tomahawk@gmail.com I had entered oliver.tomahawk@gmail.con. 

Wow - anyway, I'm back in business and maybe I am harbouring secret resentment towards gmail even though I think it's really good !?

Getting back to spread betting - today was again a really good day. 
Up £2,732 on yesterday, narrowly missing £20,000 profits !

I am almost two thirds of my way to my goal and so far, instead of taking 8 months as I expected it to, it has taken just over 2 - so far so good !

Ended up £1,074 up on yesterday.

And that is great, if I continue this up trend I will be retired soon !

Overall profits sitting at just below £17,000 now (£16,965.24 to be precise).

Below I have got my usual profit & loss table for today but I have also added my overall P&L chart as well as my volatility chart for today (when I was tracking it) and as you will see it ranged between £16,500 and £17,500.  So yes, spread betting is highly volatile, you need to look at the big picture and not worry about the swings. I have learned this the hard way in the past. You have to remain calm no matter what.

Up £4,618 on yesterday - touched £16,000 in profits, finally closing on £15,891 which puts me well on my way to my £30,000 target !

Week 9 - day 1 trade log

Into my ninth week in this experiment and took a hot on day 1 ! Wow, quite a hit as well, down £2,384 but considering Friday's phenomenal rise I am not too concerned (yet)

Sold BSkyB - decided to take my profits. I am now down to 11 bets and my three worst performing look like they are going to be closed soon (Barratt, Bellway & Taylor Wimpey) in which case I will be down to 8 bets. I am looking for some inspiration into some great bets to place - anyone !?
